#1 · Jan 18, 2019 I have a 2017 with 36k. I didn't find much on here about this and I'm curious who else has gone through this, and what this means long term. I had a few instances where the Check engine light came on and the car shifted over to the generator, even though there was more then 50% battery life. Thankfully I never got stranded.

The Volt is overall a very reliable car. You have the BECM around 30-60k, and S2P at some point in the first 100k. After that, depending on your ICE usage, the only likely problem you will have is the EGR valve getting clogged, usually after 100k. Obviously the car won't last forever, but GM really over-engineered these things.

I'm kind of curious how prevalent 2018 BECM failures are. Mine occurred at 36,270 miles (300 after BtB warranty expired) and 3 weeks shy of 3 years. Symptom:

But good to know this option at least. My quote was $12k for a 2012 replacement battery. I posted back in 2018 when I had to replace the battery in my 2012, cost $10.5k. Dealerships regularly will give extremely high price quotes and excuses as a "we don't want to deal with this, unless you REALLY shell out for it".

At least I can replace the 12v battery myself. It took 28 days to find a new BECM and replace it. But, I consider myself lucky. Others have waited a lot longer. GM needs to issue a recall or at least offer to replace the module when it fails after the car is out of its warranty period. The cost of the part isn't the problem.
